Pura Besakih (Mother Temple)
Set on the slopes of Mount Agung, Pura Besakih is Bali’s largest and holiest temple complex, often called the “Mother Temple.” The temple complex consists of more than 23 separate but related temples, offering breathtaking mountain views and a chance to experience Balinese Hindu spirituality.
Lempuyang Temple (Gates of Heaven)
Perched high in the eastern hills, Lempuyang is one of Bali’s oldest and most sacred temples. Its iconic split gateway perfectly frames Mount Agung in the distance and is a view that’s become one of the Bali’s most photographed scenes.
This is a famous social media selfie spot. You will find people queuing for hours to get their turn for the perfect photo. Best visited early in the morning to avoid the long queues and high volume of visitors.
Tirta Gangga Water Palace
Once a royal palace, Tirta Gangga is a peaceful garden filled with clear spring-fed pools, stone fountains, and graceful statues. Visitors can wander the pathways, walk across stepping stones, and feed koi in an idyllic, tranquil setting.
Pura Goa Lawah (Bat Cave Temple)
Located near Candidasa, Pura Goa Lawah is often included among the holiest places of worship on Bali. The temple is built around the entrance of a natural cave that’s home to thousands of bats, which can be seen clinging to the ceiling and flying out at dusk. Dating back to the 11th century, it’s an active place of worship where daily offerings and ceremonies are held, blending coastal beauty with deep spiritual significance.
Taman Ujung Water Palace
Located near the coast, Taman Ujung combines Balinese and European architecture, surrounded by reflection pools, bridges, and manicured gardens. It’s a scenic spot with panoramic views stretching from Mount Agung to the sea.
Sidemen Valley
A stunning, lush, unspoiled valley of rice terraces, rivers, and small villages, Sidemen offers a glimpse of traditional rural life. It’s perfect for leisurely walks or quiet scenic drives among Bali’s farming communities.
Candidasa
A peaceful seaside town and the main base for exploring East Bali. Candidasa offers calm lagoon beaches, boutique resorts, and an easygoing atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to relax after visiting temples or inland villages.
Amed & Tulamben
These relaxed coastal villages are famous for their black sand beaches and excellent snorkeling and diving. Tulamben’s USS Liberty Shipwreck is one of the world’s most accessible dive sites, while Amed is known for coral gardens and stunning sunrise views of Mount Agung.
Tenganan Village
One of Bali’s oldest Bali Aga (original Balinese) communities, Tenganan preserves unique customs, architecture, and craftsmanship. Visitors can see traditional double ikat weaving and gain insight into Bali’s ancient cultural roots.
